Tax Credits

A number of federal  tax credits are available.

  • Air source heat pumps: $ 300 SEER 14+
  • Central AC  $ 300 Split systems SEER 16+, Package Systems SEER 14
  • Gas, propane or oil Hot water Boiler  $ 150  AFUE 95
  • Natural Gas, propane or oil Furnace  $ 150  AFUE 95
  • Insulation 10% of cost up to $ 500 [materials only, not installation]
  • Metal roofs and asphalt roofs with high SRI: 10% of cost up to $ 500  [materials only, not installation]
  • Gas oil or propane Water Heater: 90% efficiency, Energy Factor .82+,  $300
  • Electric Heat Pump Water Heater:  Energy Factor at least 2.0,   $ 300
  • Windows, Doors Skylights, Energy Star:  10% of cost up to $ 500, but windows capped at $ 200. [materials only, not installation]

Additionally, the tax credit for alternative energy is 30% of cost with no upper limit until 2016

The City of Virginia Beach offers a special assessment for property taxes on an energy-efficient building that exceeds the current standards of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code by 30%. (This does not apply to the assessment of the real property on which the building is located.)

Personal Deduction on Virginia income taxes – up to $ 500.  The state allows you to deduct 20% of the sales tax paid for Energy Star rated appliances and programmable thermostats.
